Cardinals Outlast Reds 7-5 in 10 Innings After De La Cruz’s Error

CINCINNATI (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals earned a 7-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings Friday night at Great American Ball Park, seizing the extra-frames win on an error by Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz.
Nathan Church raced home with the go-ahead run when De La Cruz’s rushed throw from the hole short-hopped first baseman Spencer Steer, allowing Church to score the tying run and ultimately the decisive tally in the 10th. Two batters later, Masyn Winn delivered an insurance RBI single, capping off a 3-for-5 night with three RBIs and a double.
The game featured five lead changes. St. Louis struck first in the opening inning on Iván Herrera’s first-pitch solo homer. Cincinnati responded in the bottom half as Noelvi Marte tied it with a solo shot, then De La Cruz’s double and Austin Hays’ sacrifice fly put the Reds ahead 2-1. The Cardinals reclaimed the lead 3-2 in the second when Pedro Pagés connected for a two-run homer.
After Spencer Steer’s solo shot in the sixth knotted the score, Elly De La Cruz tripled and scored on Miguel Andújar’s single in the seventh to make it 4-4. St. Louis went ahead 5-4 in the eighth on Winn’s RBI double, but Ke’Bryan Hayes belted his second homer of the season in the bottom of the inning to force extra frames.
Matt Svanson (3-0) earned the win by recording the final out of the eighth and throwing a scoreless ninth. Ryan Fernandez closed out the 10th for his first save of the season, striking out De La Cruz looking for the final out. Tony Santillan (1-5) took the loss, surrendering two unearned runs in the 10th on the De La Cruz miscue.
St. Louis improved to 68-69, while Cincinnati fell to 69-67. The clubs meet again Saturday night, with LHP Andrew Abbott (8-4, 2.62 ERA) set to start for the Reds against Cardinals RHP Michael McGreevy (5-2, 4.43 ERA).
