Men Gain Fat on Ultra-Processed Diets, Even with Equal Calories
An international study published today in Cell Metabolism reveals that men consuming ultra-processed foods accrue significantly more fat than those on minimally processed diets, despite identical calorie intake. Over a six-week controlled trial involving 43 healthy young men, participants spent three weeks on each diet, separated by a three-month washout period. Those on the ultra-processed regimen gained an average of 1 kg more fat mass than on the unprocessed diet, regardless of whether they consumed maintenance or surplus calories. Researchers also detected elevated levels of the endocrine-disrupting phthalate cxMINP and reduced testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone in men eating ultra-processed meals-markers linked to poorer sperm quality and metabolic health. Lead author Jessica Preston warns that “it is the processed nature of these foods that makes them harmful,” urging a reevaluation of nutritional guidelines to address chronic disease risks associated with food processing.
