John Oates Reflects on Solo Comeback in NPR Interview

Philadelphia, PA - August 30, 2025 John Oates, best known as half of the chart-topping duo Hall & Oates, spoke with NPR’s Scott Simon today about his career and the release of his latest solo album, Oates. In the wide-ranging conversation, Oates detailed his motivations for returning to pop and R&B roots and shared insights into the recording process that he described as “totally freeing”.
Oates-who parted ways with Daryl Hall in 2023 following a legal dispute-recounted how revisiting the sounds of 1970s Philadelphia soul helped reignite his passion. He explained that working with an all-new collective of musicians, dubbed The Good Road Band, allowed him to experiment with modern production techniques and electronic programming alongside the organic instrumentation of his past.
The album, released August 29, features 13 tracks that blend vintage groove with contemporary flair, including standout songs “Enough Is Enough” and “Pushin’ a Rock.” Oates noted that the creative process “flowed” without second-guessing, crediting both his collaborators and the spontaneity of the sessions for the record’s seamless cohesion.
Also today, Oates took to social media to express pride in the new album, thanking fans and collaborators for their support. His post has already amassed thousands of likes and positive comments, underscoring the enthusiasm for his solo resurgence.
