Tigers Rally Past Royals 5-3 in Come-From-Behind Victory

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter each delivered two-run doubles and Dillon Dingler added a solo home run as the Detroit Tigers erased a three-run deficit to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Friday night.

After Tigers starter Chris Paddack yielded three runs on five hits over 3⅓ innings, four Detroit relievers combined to shut out Kansas City on four hits the rest of the way. Kyle Finnegan (4-4) worked 1⅔ scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and Will Vest recorded his 20th save.

The Royals struck immediately, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Yastrzemski led off with his 11th career leadoff homer and fourth since joining Kansas City on July 31, Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a single to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, and Maikel Garcia capped the rally with his 14th homer.

Detroit answered in the sixth. Greene’s two-run double to left-center tied the game at 3-3, and Carpenter’s two-run double in the eighth broke the tie. Dingler added his 12th homer of the season in the eighth, putting the Tigers ahead for good.

Seth Lugo (8-7) struggled in relief for the Royals, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks over 3⅓ innings. Kansas City now sits three games behind Seattle for the American League’s final wild-card spot.

Up next, Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (7-13, 4.87 ERA) will face Royals RHP Stephen Kolek (4-5, 4.18 ERA) on Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium.
