WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump took several high-profile actions and saw key rulings affecting his administration on Saturday.
Trump Blocks $4.9 Billion in Foreign Aid In an unprecedented move, the White House announced that Trump has used a “pocket rescission” to block the disbursement of $4.9 billion in foreign assistance approved by Congress, directing the funds away from the State Department and USAID. By submitting the rescission at the end of the fiscal year, Congress cannot vote on it within the 45-day window required to override the president’s request, effectively canceling the aid as the fiscal year closes on September 30.
Appeals Court Limits Trump’s Tariff Authority On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 7-4 that Trump exceeded his statutory authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act by imposing broad global tariffs. Though the court found the duties illegal, it allowed them to remain in place pending possible Supreme Court review, dealing a blow to Trump’s expansive trade agenda and raising questions about the future of his “Liberation Day” levies on imports from numerous trading partners.
Federal Judge Halts Rapid Deportation Policy A U.S. District Court judge in Washington, D.C., temporarily blocked the administration’s plan to expand expedited removal of undocumented migrants living in the interior, finding that the broader application of the expedited-deportation process likely violates due process rights under the Fifth Amendment. The decision pauses Trump’s effort to carry out swift deportations without individual judicial review.
