Gearbox Unveils Post-Launch Roadmap for Borderlands 4 at PAX West

Seattle, WA - August 31, 2025 In a special segment at PAX West today, Gearbox Software revealed an ambitious post-launch roadmap for Borderlands 4, outlining both free updates and paid expansions slated through 2026.

The core of the announcement focused on a blend of seasonal mini-events, Bounty Packs, Invincible Boss challenges, and two major Story Packs. First up is the Horrors of Kairos seasonal event-set to debut shortly after the game’s September 12 launch-featuring new cosmetics, weapons, and limited-time challenges. Alongside this free content, the initial Bounty Pack will introduce fresh missions, boss fights, rerollable Legendary loot, and themed Vault Cards included in the Deluxe and Super Deluxe Editions.

Gearbox also confirmed the return of Pearlescent-rarity weapons and shields, a feature absent since Borderlands 2, arriving early next year as part of a free update. For players seeking the ultimate challenge, Invincible Bosses-high-difficulty, arena-style encounters-will roll out in late 2025.

Looking ahead to 2026, two paid Story Packs will expand the narrative and vault hunter roster. The first, Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is scheduled for Q1 2026 and stars Ellie in a cosmic-horror tale set on a new world. Each Story Pack will deliver a new Vault Hunter class, a mini-campaign, exclusive cosmetics, and a dedicated playable zone.
