Costco to Close All U.S. Warehouses on Labor Day; New Early Shopping Hours Rule Takes Effect

August 31, 2025

In a joint announcement issued today, Costco Wholesale Corporation confirmed that all 634 of its U.S. warehouse locations will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labor Day. This decision aligns with Costco’s longstanding practice of providing employees time off on seven major federal holidays, including New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

The retailer emphasized that normal business hours will resume on Tuesday, September 2, with warehouses reopening at 9 a.m. local time. Costco members looking to stock up for end-of-summer gatherings are advised to visit their nearest warehouse on Sunday, August 31, before the holiday closure.

In a separate development announced today, Costco confirmed that it will begin fully enforcing its weekday early shopping hours rule starting Labor Day. Since June, Executive Members have enjoyed exclusive access from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., while general members could arrive at opening time. Beginning Monday, September 1, only Executive Members will be permitted inside warehouses during that early-access window, with all other shoppers allowed entry at 10 a.m..

This enforcement aims to streamline foot traffic and reward Executive Members for their loyalty, as the retailer fine-tunes operations amid its busiest season. Customers seeking to take advantage of Labor Day promotions or special deals on appliances and seasonal items should plan their visits accordingly, either before the holiday closure or once regular hours resume on September 2.
