Protest at Minnesota State Fair Temporarily Closes Main Gate

ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 31, 2025 - A coalition of at least ten activist groups staged their 10th annual demonstration outside the Minnesota State Fair on Saturday, prompting fair officials to close Gate 5 at the Snelling Avenue and Midway Parkway entrance for 1 hour and 24 minutes.

The main entrance was shut at 1:08 p.m. “due to a demonstration,” according to a statement from fair organizers. Pedestrians were diverted to alternative gates and several buses that typically used Gate 5 were paused until the entrance reopened at 2:32 p.m.

Protesters marched from nearby Hamline Park to the fairgrounds, demanding that the state divest from Israel, institute community oversight of police, and enact stronger protections for LGBTQ residents. Fair management urged attendees to use other entry points during the disruption, and local transit officials issued alerts to riders affected by the temporary suspension of bus service at Snelling Avenue.

St. Paul Police Department personnel monitored the peaceful rally, providing traffic control to maintain safety for demonstrators and fairgoers alike. The protest concluded without incident when participants returned to Hamline Park shortly before the gate reopened.

The Minnesota State Fair continues through Labor Day weekend, with organizers reminding visitors that all entrances remain open and security measures are in place to ensure a safe experience for everyone.
