Night of Rock and Surprise at Soldier Field

Chicago, Illinois - August 31, 2025

In a thrilling weekend for rock fans, Soldier Field hosted a sold-out double-header featuring System of a Down and Avenged Sevenfold, while an unexpected reunion rocked a nearby bar on the eve of the main event.

System of a Down & Avenged Sevenfold Launch Massive Two-Night Stadium Residency Soldier Field gates opened at 4:30 PM Sunday, welcoming 62,000 fervent fans for the kickoff of System of a Down’s two-night headlining run in Chicago. Joined by special guests Avenged Sevenfold, Polyphia, and Wisp, the bands delivered a high-octane setlist that blended classic hits with pyrotechnic-laden production. Showtime began at 5:30 PM, with thousands cheering as the first chords of “Chop Suey!” echoed across the historic lakeside stadium.

Organizers noted a seamless, cashless entry process and quick security lines, thanks in part to pre-purchased mobile tickets and advanced parking reservations. Rideshare drop-off at the DuSable Lake Shore Drive ramp remained efficient, and public transportation via CTA buses and trains provided easy access for concertgoers.

Daron Malakian’s Spontaneous Drop-In Sparks Barroom Frenzy On Saturday night, the frenzy began early when Daron Malakian, guitarist and vocalist of System of a Down, surprised patrons at The Cubby Bear in Wrigleyville. Malakian joined “Peephole,” a local SOAD tribute band, for an impromptu performance of “Cigaro,” delighting a crowd of around 200. He recounted wandering in after dinner and hearing the tribute band’s intro from the street, then jumping onstage unannounced. Fans and band members alike described the moment as “priceless” and “one of the coolest moments ever”.

Weekend Outlook The group returns to Soldier Field Monday, September 1, for the second installment of their residency. Doors again open at 4:30 PM, with showtime at 5:30 PM. Fans are encouraged to download mobile tickets and secure rideshare or CTA plans in advance to ensure a smooth arrival.
