Verizon Largely Restores Service Following Nationwide Outage

August 31, 2025 - Verizon customers across the United States saw a significant restoration of wireless service Sunday evening after a widespread network outage that began Saturday and affected thousands of users.
The disruption, first reported around midday Saturday, was traced to a software issue in Verizon’s network infrastructure. Outage tracking site DownDetector registered a peak of nearly 25,000 reports at approximately 3:30 p.m. EDT, with the hardest-hit areas including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Miami.
Verizon engineers worked through Saturday night to address the problem, and by 7:30 p.m. PDT, service had been restored in most major metropolitan regions, including Houston, Seattle, and the Bay Area. By midnight, only a few hundred isolated incidents remained, underscoring the scope of the recovery effort.
In a post on its support channel, Verizon confirmed that the network had been fixed and apologized for the disruption, urging customers to visit its Check Network Status page for real-time updates and to restart devices if they continued to experience intermittent service.
Customers impacted by the outage reported devices stuck in “SOS” or “No Service” mode, prompting reminders that emergency calls remained available despite the broader connectivity lapse. Verizon has pledged to review its response and enhance communication protocols to mitigate similar incidents in the future.
As of Sunday morning, Verizon’s network was operating normally nationwide, and the company stated that its teams would continue monitoring performance to ensure full stability.
