Wisconsin Volleyball Falls in Straight Sets to No. 5 Texas

Madison, Wis. - The No. 8 Wisconsin Badgers dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 5 Texas on Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center, falling by scores of 29-27, 25-20 and 25-14 in the Opening Spike Classic. Texas improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Wisconsin fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Wisconsin battled to force extra points in the opening set, rallying from a 27-26 deficit behind senior Grace Egan, who posted a team-high 16 kills and 12 digs. Despite out-killing the Longhorns 19-16 in the first frame, the Badgers committed 13 errors (five service) compared to Texas’ eight, allowing the visitors to escape with a 29-27 set victory.

The Longhorns took control in the second set, holding a narrow lead through much of the frame before closing out the Badgers 25-20. Wisconsin’s 22 total errors (seven service) again proved costly, negating a 34-31 edge in kills and 39-36 advantage in digs.

In the decisive third set, Texas dominated, pulling away early and cruising to a 25-14 win. Wisconsin’s error count ballooned to 34 (eight service) for the match-more than double Texas’ 14-erasing any statistical edge in kills (45-44) and digs (55-49) that the Badgers had amassed.

Mimi Colyer added 14 kills for Wisconsin but also recorded 10 errors, highlighting the disparity in consistency. With the defeat, the Badgers will regroup before returning to action on Thursday against UC Davis at the UW Field House.
