Graham Greene, Oscar-Nominated Actor, Dies at 73

Toronto, September 1, 2025 - Graham Greene, the Canadian First Nations actor best known for his Academy Award-nominated turn as Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves, died Sunday afternoon at a Toronto hospital. He was 73 years old.
According to Greene’s agent, Michael Greene (no relation), the actor passed away with his wife, Hilary Blackmore, by his side. No cause of death has been disclosed.
Greene’s career spanned more than four decades, beginning in the early 1980s with roles in films such as Running Brave and Revolution. His breakthrough came in 1990’s Dances with Wolves, earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He later appeared in The Green Mile, Snow Dogs, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Wind River, and Molly’s Game, and on television in series including American Gods and Riverdale.
A trailblazer for Indigenous actors in Hollywood, Greene was celebrated for bringing depth and dignity to his characters. His final screen appearance is slated to be in the upcoming thriller Ice Fall, starring Joel Kinnaman and Danny Huston.
Greene is survived by his wife, daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and son Tarlo Greene. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
