Red Sox Rally Past Guardians 6-4 in Opening Game of Series

Boston, MA - The Boston Red Sox defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-4 on Monday at Fenway Park, taking the opener of their three-game series. Carlos Narváez delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie, and Trevor Story followed with a peculiar solo home run in the sixth that caromed off a fielder’s glove and the foul pole before landing fair.

Boston jumped ahead early with a run in the first inning when Roman Anthony scored on a balk by Guardians starter Parker Messick. A second run crossed on Romy Gonzalez’s RBI single later in the inning, giving the Red Sox a 2-0 advantage. Cleveland responded with three runs in the second, highlighted by C.J. Kayfus’s RBI single and Brayan Rocchio’s two-run hit to forge a 3-2 lead. Story evened the game at 3-3 in the second with an RBI single that scored Connor Wong.

Brayan Bello (11-6) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits over five innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Aroldis Chapman closed out the contest for his 28th save, extending his club-record hitless streak to 16 games. Kyle Manzardo provided Cleveland’s lone long ball, a solo homer in the eighth inning, but the Guardians dropped to 68-68 on the season. The Red Sox improved to 77-62, moving within a percentage point of the AL’s top wild-card spot.
