Jaume Munar Makes First Grand Slam Round of 16 at 2025 US Open

NEW YORK, September 1, 2025 - Spain’s Jaume Munar reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career today at the US Open, defeating Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 16.
Munar, 28, entered the tournament ranked a career-high No. 44 in the ATP standings following a breakout season on hard courts. Born in Santanyí on May 5, 1997, he honed his game at Rafael Nadal’s academy in Mallorca and had long aspired to excel beyond the early rounds of majors. After eleven consecutive second-round exits to start his Slam career, today’s victory marks his deepest run at a major and underscores his evolution into one of Spain’s top prospects.
In the third round, Munar’s aggressive baseline play and tactical variety overwhelmed Bergs. He converted seven of twelve break-point opportunities, saving three out of four break points against his own serve to maintain control throughout the match. Munar struck 38 winners and maintained a first-serve percentage of 69%, dictating play with heavy groundstrokes and precise angles.
Looking ahead, Munar will face tenth seed Lorenzo Musetti on Monday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium for a spot in the quarterfinals. With a 2-1 head-to-head edge over the Italian-most recently defeating him in Hong Kong earlier this year-Munar will seek to continue his historic run in Flushing Meadows.
