Longtime Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler Announces Retirement

Washington, D.C., September 1, 2025 - Representative Jerrold “Jerry” Nadler (D-N.Y.), the 78-year-old dean of New York’s congressional delegation and a central figure in three presidential impeachments, announced today that he will not seek re-election in 2026, bringing an end to his 34-year tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives.
In an exclusive with The New York Times, Nadler cited the Democratic Party’s “generational change” as a driving factor behind his decision, referencing President Biden’s recent exit from the 2024 race as an example of leadership transition within the party. Nadler, who first won election in 1992 and later served as chair and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, said he has “accepted that reality” of new voices emerging in Congress.
Nadler’s announcement comes amid growing calls within Democratic ranks for younger leadership. His influence had already waned in the early days of the 119th Congress, when he was replaced as the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, signaling a shift toward younger lawmakers.
Political observers predict a competitive primary next year to fill Nadler’s Manhattan-based seat, long regarded as one of the nation’s bluest districts. Potential contenders are expected to include progressive activists and seasoned city officials attracted by the rare open seat in the heart of New York City.
In a statement released via his congressional office, Nadler expressed gratitude to his constituents for their “faith and support,” and urged voters to “continue the work of protecting civil liberties and upholding the Constitution.” His decision is effective at the end of his current term in January 2027.
