Robin Wright Describes Move to England as “Liberating”

London, September 1, 2025 - Academy Award-nominated actress Robin Wright announced today that she has permanently relocated from the United States to England, calling the decision “liberating” and criticizing life back home as a “s-tshow.”

Wright, 59, best known for her roles in Forrest Gump and House of Cards, spoke with The Times of London about her move to the English coast with partner architect Henry Smith. “It’s liberating to be done,” she told the newspaper. “To be finished with searching, looking, and only achieving 60 percent of what you desired.”

The Texas-born, California-raised star emphasized the contrast between her experiences in the U.S. and her new life abroad. “I love being in this country,” Wright said of England. “There’s a sense of personal freedom here. The people are incredibly kind. They’re truly living their lives, as opposed to being stuck in traffic, frantically on the phone, while eating a sandwich. That’s the reality for most of America - it’s all about haste, competition, and speed.”

Wright and Smith are renting a seaside home, where the actress says she has found both tranquility and companionship. She recalled meeting Smith in a London pub when she asked another patron to feed his Labrador some steak, only to discover the dog belonged to Smith. “He’s a sweetheart and a genuinely decent man. It’s so comforting to be appreciated and loved for who I am,” Wright shared.

In addition to discussing her move, Wright reflected on her career and personal life. She lamented feeling “not strict enough” as a mother to her two children with ex-husband Sean Penn, admitting this regret has weighed on her for years.

Wright will next be seen starring and directing in the Prime Video series The Girlfriend, which premieres all six episodes on September 10.
