Woody Allen Expresses Desire to Direct Donald Trump Again, Praises His Acting

Woody Allen has revealed that he would welcome the opportunity to direct President Donald Trump in a future film, describing him as “a very good actor” and “a pleasure to work with” during their previous collaboration.

In a segment of Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast released on September 1, 2025, Allen-who directed Trump in a cameo role for his 1998 film Celebrity-recounted his experience with the former president on set. “He was always courteous, hit his marks perfectly, and showcased a genuine talent for show business,” Allen stated. “I believe I could direct him effectively now. If he would allow me to take the reins while he’s in office, I think I could achieve remarkable results”.

The four-time Academy Award-winning director emphasized that, despite voting for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in 2024 and disagreeing with Trump on nearly all of his policies, his judgment of Trump’s abilities as an actor is based solely on their professional interaction. “I’m among the few who can claim that I directed Trump,” Allen remarked. “I differ with him on 99 percent of his viewpoints, but as an actor, he was very convincing and possessed a charismatic presence”.

Allen’s comments arrive amid ongoing discussions about the intersection of politics and entertainment, with Maher noting on the podcast that the presidency itself can be viewed as “the ultimate acting role.” Allen responded that all politicians adopt a public persona, yet his assessment of Trump remains rooted in their cinematic collaboration.
