Vogue Names Candice Bergen’s Daughter as Its New Editorial Lead

NEW YORK, September 2, 2025 - American Vogue has begun a new chapter as Anna Wintour reportedly tapped Chloé Malle, daughter of Academy Award-winning actress Candice Bergen, to serve as the magazine’s Head of Editorial Content. This generational handover marks the end of Wintour’s 37-year reign as day-to-day editor-in-chief while she transitions to Condé Nast’s global chief content officer role.
Malle, 39, has spent the last decade rising through Vogue’s ranks-starting as social editor in 2011, advancing to contributing editor in 2016, and most recently directing Vogue.com. A Brown University alumna, she co-hosts the The Run-Through with Vogue podcast and oversaw high-profile features such as Lauren Sánchez’s June 2025 wedding for Vogue’s digital platform. Her insider experience and editorial pedigree made her the leading internal candidate when Wintour announced in June that she would step back from daily oversight.
The choice has sparked debate over industry nepotism, with some lauding Malle’s “decades of hands-on editorial work,” while others question whether her family connections-her father is French filmmaker Louis Malle-played an outsized role in her ascension. Supporters argue she brings a “practical, reasonable” vision to guide Vogue through a rapidly evolving media landscape, especially as New York Fashion Week looms on September 11.
Vogue is expected to formally confirm Malle’s appointment in the coming days, setting the stage for her to debut in the role at the kickoff of Fashion Week. Meanwhile, Bergen herself has not publicly commented on her daughter’s new position.
