Oscar-Nominated Actor Graham Greene Dies at 73

Toronto, September 2, 2025 - Acclaimed Canadian actor Graham Greene, best known for his Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Kicking Bird in Dances With Wolves, has died at the age of 73 after a prolonged illness, his representative confirmed today.

Greene, a member of the Oneida First Nation, was born on June 22, 1952, on the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario. He began his career on stage in the 1970s before making his screen debut in the television series The Great Detective in 1979 and his film debut in Running Brave (1983). His breakthrough came in 1990 with Dances With Wolves, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Over a career spanning more than four decades, Greene appeared in over 200 film and television productions. His notable credits include Thunderheart (1992), Maverick (1994), Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999), and recurring roles in the Twilight Saga and acclaimed series such as Reservation Dogs. In 2025 alone, he won the Canadian Screen Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Comedy Film for his role in Seeds and received Canada’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

“He was a great man of morals, ethics, character and will be eternally missed,” Greene’s talent agent said in a statement.

Greene is survived by his wife, Hilary Blackmore, his daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene, and his grandson Talo. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
