Graham Greene, Oscar-Nominated ‘Dances With Wolves’ Actor, Dies at 73

In a somber announcement on September 2, 2025, veteran Canadian actor Graham Greene-best known for his Academy Award-nominated turn as Kicking Bird in Kevin Costner’s 1990 epic Dances With Wolves-has died at the age of 73 after a prolonged illness.

Represented by his agent, Michael Greene, the actor’s passing was confirmed Monday. “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character, and will be eternally missed,” the statement read, though it did not specify the nature of his illness.

Greene’s career spanned more than four decades and included roles in prominent Hollywood films such as Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. He also made notable television appearances in series like Reservation Dogs, Riverdale and Marvel’s Echo.

Born in Ohsweken on the Six Nations Reserve, Greene began acting on stage in the 1970s before making his small-screen debut in the Canadian drama The Great Detective (1979). His performance in Dances With Wolves earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 1991 and helped pave the way for Indigenous performers in mainstream cinema.

Among the tributes pouring in, SAG-AFTRA lauded Greene as “a pioneer for Indigenous representation,” and Dances With Wolves director Kevin Costner recalled his co-star’s dedication to mastering the Lakota language for the role. Canadian Governor General Mary Simon issued a statement honoring Greene’s legacy, noting his barrier-breaking contributions to both Canadian culture and global cinema.

Greene is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore; his daughter, Lilly Lazare-Greene; and his grandson, Talo. A private service is expected to be held in Stratford, Ontario.
