President Trump Announces Relocation of U.S. Space Command Headquarters

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2, 2025 - President Donald J. Trump delivered a televised address from the Oval Office at 2 p.m. ET, announcing that the U.S. Space Command’s permanent headquarters will relocate from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. This decision reverses a 2023 action by the Biden administration to keep Space Command at a temporary facility in Colorado Springs and aligns with a recommendation by Space Command leadership and the Department of Defense Inspector General, as it is projected to save $426 million in long-term costs.
In his remarks, the president emphasized the strategic importance of the move, citing Huntsville’s long history of space and defense expertise and the region’s robust infrastructure to support satellite navigation, troop communications, and missile-launch alert functions managed by Space Command. He stated, “By locating our Space Command headquarters at Redstone Arsenal, we are reinforcing America’s leadership in the final frontier and ensuring our warfighters have the best facilities and support network available.”
The announcement drew swift reactions from both Alabama and Colorado officials. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey praised the decision as “a tremendous win for our state and the millions of Americans who depend on a strong national space defense,” while Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed disappointment, noting that the state had “offered outstanding support and resources to host our nation’s premier space command” and vowing to continue advocating for future federal space missions.
According to a senior defense official, the relocation process will begin immediately, with an interim coordination office established in Huntsville later this month. The move is expected to be completed by late 2027, pending final approvals and funding allocations from Congress.
