Supreme Court Anniversary Fifty-one years ago today, in United States v. Nixon, the Supreme Court unanimously ordered President Richard Nixon to surrender Oval Office tape recordings pertinent to the Watergate investigation. The ruling, issued on September 2, 1974, affirmed that “not even the President is above the law,” compelling Nixon to comply and setting a landmark precedent on executive privilege.
