Sheinelle Jones to Return to “Today” on Friday, Sept. 5 After Extended Leave

September 2, 2025

Sheinelle Jones, co-host of the third hour of Today, will make her long-awaited return to Studio 1A on Friday, September 5, following a nine-month absence after the death of her husband, Uche Ojeh.

Veteran anchor Savannah Guthrie broke the news Tuesday morning on Today’s broadcast, alongside Craig Melvin. “Yes, our beloved Sheinelle will be returning to the show,” Guthrie announced, adding that Jones and her family “have been through so much after the devastating loss of her husband, Uche”.

Jones stepped away from the program on December 18, 2024, initially citing a “family health matter” in a January Instagram post. On May 23, Today co-hosts shared with viewers that Ojeh, 45, had succumbed to glioblastoma-a particularly aggressive brain cancer-leaving Sheinelle to care for their three children: eldest son Kayin, 16, and twins Uche Jr. and Clara, 13.

Her return will feature a pre-taped, in-depth interview with Guthrie, in which Jones describes her grief as a “beautiful nightmare” and offers words of hope for others facing loss. Jones has expressed immense gratitude for the support she’s received from viewers, friends and colleagues during her absence.

Fellow Today personalities, including Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker, have publicly shared their eagerness to welcome Jones back, emphasizing her enduring optimism and the strong bond she shares with the Today family. The September 5 broadcast marks her first on-air appearance since mid-December and is anticipated to be a poignant moment for both Jones and her audience.
