Amazon Ends Prime Invitee Shipping Perk Outside Household

NEW YORK-On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, Amazon announced that it will discontinue its Prime Invitee Program, which allowed members to share free two-day shipping benefits with users at different addresses, effective October 1, 2025.
In an update to its customer service webpage and direct emails to Prime subscribers, the company stated that any “invitees” who do not reside at the same primary address as the account holder will lose access to shared shipping and will be prompted to sign up for their own Prime membership. Affected users will receive notification of the change by September 5, 2025.
Amazon is replacing the program with Amazon Family, under which members can share Prime perks-including free shipping, Prime Video, Prime Reading, and select third-party benefits-with one additional adult and up to four children, provided all share the same primary residential address. To qualify, family members must share a digital wallet to verify household membership.
The move mirrors a broader industry trend of tightening subscription sharing, following similar actions by streaming services. According to a Reuters report, the shift may also help Amazon boost new Prime sign-ups after U.S. membership growth during this year’s extended Prime Day fell short of internal targets.
Prime subscriptions in the U.S. cost $14.99 per month or $139 per year. Once the Invitee program ends, non-household beneficiaries will be offered a promotional first-year rate of $14.99 before standard monthly pricing applies.
