Blue Jays Rally from Five-Run Deficit to Defeat Reds 13-9 in High-Scoring Affair

CINCINNATI (Sept. 3, 2025) - The Toronto Blue Jays overcame a five-run first inning by the Cincinnati Reds to post a 13-9 victory at Great American Ball Park on Wednesday night.
Cincinnati jumped to an early 5-0 lead in the second inning behind a two-run double by Nick Martini and a three-run single by Jonathan India. However, Toronto’s offense erupted in response, belting five home runs and collecting 18 hits en route to the comeback triumph.
George Springer ignited the rally with his 27th homer of the season in the third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-1. In the fourth, Daulton Varsho and David Kirk went back-to-back with solo shots, trimming Cincinnati’s advantage to 5-3. Toronto seized the lead in the fifth frame on home runs by Addison Barger (three runs) and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., making it 7-5.
The Blue Jays continued to pour it on in the eighth inning, scoring four runs on a sacrifice fly by Varsho, an RBI single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and doubles from Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman. A two-out RBI double by Guerrero Jr. in the ninth sealed the 13-9 final.
Zach Littell (4⅓ IP, 7 H, 5 ER) and two relievers struggled to contain Toronto’s lineup, while left-hander Louis Varland delivered five shutout outs in relief, striking out one over two innings. Jeff Hoffman earned the save by retiring the final two batters to preserve the win.
Toronto improves to 81-59, while Cincinnati falls to 70-70 on the season.
