ChatGPT Experiences Global Outage, Users Report Service Disruption

September 3, 2025 - 14:30 UTC

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship conversational AI, suffered a widespread service disruption on Wednesday, with users across multiple regions reporting errors and slow responses.

According to Downdetector, a third-party outage tracking site, hundreds of users filed reports of disrupted access over a twenty-minute period beginning around 13:45 UTC. The spike in error reports indicates a significant interruption in ChatGPT’s availability.

The outage impacted a diverse international user base, with India alone accounting for over 439 reports of failed requests and capacity errors on Downdetector. Users in Europe, North America, and South America similarly took to social media to ask “Is ChatGPT down?” and share screenshots of “Something went wrong” messages.

As of this afternoon, OpenAI has not issued an official statement on the incident or its resolution timeline. Service status on the OpenAI status page remained unchanged, showing no acknowledged incidents.

The disruption follows a series of intermittent performance issues experienced by ChatGPT in recent weeks, though this marks one of the most significant outages since early August. Affected users are advised to monitor OpenAI’s status page and third-party trackers for updates.
