Brewers Edge Phillies 6-3 Behind Early Rush and Quintana Gem

Milwaukee, WI - The Milwaukee Brewers opened the scoring in emphatic fashion on Wednesday night, erupting for five runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies at American Family Field.

In the opening frame, Sal Frelick ignited the rally with an RBI single and Brice Turang crossed on an error by center fielder Harrison Bader. Isaac Collins then delivered a three-run homer to right field, staking the Brewers to a 5-0 lead after just one inning.

Jose Quintana (11-5) silenced the Phillies over 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out six. The veteran left-hander mixed his fastball and changeup effectively, inducing ground balls and limiting Philadelphia’s big hitters.

Philadelphia broke through in the fifth when Trey Turner’s run-scoring single plated Nolan Castellanos, cutting Milwaukee’s advantage to 5-1. Castellanos had earlier doubled home a run in the first inning, but the Phillies otherwise struggled to solve Milwaukee’s pitching.

The Brewers tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning on Brice Turang’s RBI double. In the seventh, the Phillies made one last push when Alec Bohm reached on an error and Bryce Wilson launched a two-run homer to left-center, closing the gap to 6-3. Ranger Suárez and Connor Overton combined to hold the Brewers scoreless the final two innings, preserving the win in relief of Quintana.

Aaron Nola (3-8) suffered the loss for Philadelphia, yielding six runs (five earned) in five innings. Jared Koenig earned his first career save for Milwaukee with a perfect ninth inning.

With the victory, the Brewers improved to 87-54, maintaining a one-game lead in the National League Central. Meanwhile, the Phillies fell to 80-60 and remain 5½ games behind the NL East-leading Braves.
