Sophie Turner Officially Cast as Lara Croft in Amazon’s Tomb Raider Series

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 3, 2025 - In a landmark announcement today, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner has been tapped to portray the iconic adventurer Lara Croft in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the Tomb Raider video game franchise.
Turner, best known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark, expressed her excitement in an official statement: “I am overjoyed to be taking on the role of Lara Croft. She is such an iconic figure, significant to so many people - and I am dedicating everything I’ve got to this role. These are big shoes to fill, following the remarkable portrayals by Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, but with Phoebe Waller-Bridge leading the project, we (and Lara) are certainly in good hands. I can’t wait for everyone to experience what we are creating.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator, writer, and executive producer of the series, will spearhead the adaptation under her overall deal with Amazon Studios. She described Turner’s casting as “incredible” and underscored the collaborative spirit of the project: “Everyone involved is deeply passionate about Lara and embodies her outrageous, brave, and humorous spirit. Prepare your artifacts… Croft is on her way.”
Production is scheduled to commence on January 19, 2026, in Vancouver, British Columbia, with Jonathan van Tulleken set to direct and Chad Hodge joining Waller-Bridge as co-showrunner and executive producer. The series marks the third on-screen portrayal of Lara Croft following Angelina Jolie’s early-2000s films and Alicia Vikander’s 2018 reboot.
The Tomb Raider TV series was greenlit by Prime Video in May 2024 and represents Amazon’s latest foray into high-profile video game adaptations. Fans worldwide eagerly anticipate Turner’s take on the fearless archaeologist and the fresh narrative direction promised by Waller-Bridge’s inventive storytelling.
