UMass Lowell Marks New Academic Year with Fall Semester Launch

September 3, 2025 - Lowell, MA - The University of Massachusetts Lowell officially commenced its fall 2025 semester today, marking the beginning of a new academic year for more than 18,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs.
First Day of Classes Begins
Fall classes began across all campuses as scheduled, with both undergraduate and graduate students starting their coursework following the university’s academic calendar. The day represents the culmination of a week-long orientation period that included New Student Convocation held on September 2 at the Tsongas Center.
The convocation ceremony featured keynote speaker William Lefebvre ’24, a recent graduate with a degree in Sustainability who now works as an Environmental Scientist at Weston & Sampson Engineers while pursuing a master’s degree at Harvard University. Chancellor Julie Chen officially inducted incoming students during the formal ceremony, which included presentations by the Air Force ROTC Color Guard, the UMass Lowell Marching Band, and various university representatives.
Campus Activities and Programs Launch
Several campus organizations kicked off their fall programming today. The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted their “First Day with OMA!” event at 9:00 AM, providing support and networking opportunities for the university’s diverse student population. The office serves as a hub for comprehensive services and programs supporting the personal, cultural, intellectual, and social development of students.
The Asian American Center for Excellence and Engagement also began their Student Coordinator Training program, along with various workshops and events designed to build community among students.
Athletic Competition Continues
The university’s women’s soccer team was scheduled to face Central Connecticut State University at 6:00 PM at Cushing Field. The River Hawks entered the match with a 1-3-1 record, looking to build momentum following their recent 0-0 draw against in-state rival Massachusetts. The game was set to be streamed live with statistics available online.
Academic Milestone
Today’s start of classes represents a significant milestone in the university calendar, following the Labor Day holiday closure and Tuesday’s convocation ceremony. Students now have until September 9 to add courses without a permission number, with the drop-add period extending through September 16.
The fall semester launch caps off the university’s “Weeks of Welcome” programming, designed to help new and returning students integrate into campus life and begin their academic journey at the institution known for its strong programs in engineering, criminal justice, education, music, science, and technology.
