Supreme Court Advances Tariff Appeal and Immigration Ruling

Washington, D.C. - September 4, 2025
The U.S. Supreme Court received two high-profile filings today, signaling swift movement on both a major trade dispute and a contested deportation case.
In the first development, the Trump administration formally asked the High Court to review and expedite consideration of a federal appeals court ruling that declared sweeping import tariffs illegal under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The Justice Department requested that the Court decide whether to grant review by next week, with briefs due in late October and oral arguments in early November-a notably accelerated schedule for the nation’s highest judicial body.
Later in the day, the Court’s emergency docket set the stage for Salvadoran national Kilmar Ábrego García to press his claim to remain in the United States. Ábrego García was wrongfully deported in March despite a 2019 immigration judge’s order barring his removal on fear of persecution. Following a lower court’s directive to facilitate his return, his attorneys petitioned the Supreme Court to enforce that order and restore his legal status pending review.
Both cases underscore the Court’s central role at the intersection of executive authority and individual rights as it heads into its October term.
