Scattered Thunderstorms and Dust Storm Warnings Sweep Phoenix on September 4, 2025

PHOENIX, AZ - Scattered thunderstorms and strong monsoon outflows moved into the Valley on Thursday, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and blowing dust to the Phoenix metro area.
A high temperature of 98°F was recorded under cloudy skies, with a muggy low of 84°F overnight. The National Weather Service placed much of metro Phoenix under a Scattered Thunderstorm outlook, with a 70 percent chance of precipitation during the afternoon and evening hours.
By early evening, NWS Phoenix issued multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for southeast Valley communities, including Chandler, Maricopa, Queen Creek, Komatke, Gila Crossing, and Santa Cruz, with wind gusts exceeding 60 mph in some locations. A Dust Storm Warning remained in effect along the I-10 and I-17 corridors near Phoenix-Mesa until 9 PM MST, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions.
Local storm spotters and ABC15 reporters documented intense downpours and frequent lightning strikes, while photographers captured a dramatic haboob-an arcing wall of dust-that rolled across south Phoenix just after sunset. Residents were urged to “Slow Down, Pull Aside, and Stay Alive” if encountering blowing dust on roadways.
Thunderstorms are expected to gradually diminish after midnight, though isolated showers may persist into Friday morning. Friday’s highs will fall into the low 90s, offering a brief respite from the week’s extreme heat and active monsoon pattern.
