Nearly Full Corn Moon Lights September Skies Ahead of Total Eclipse

Lead Astronomers reported a 95 percent-illuminated waxing gibbous Moon rising over North America this evening, signaling the imminent September Full Moon-known as the Corn Moon-slated for September 7 with a total lunar eclipse on September 7-8.
Nut Graf The Corn Moon, a traditional September Full Moon celebrated by many cultures for its bright glow, is reaching peak visibility now, offering several nights of near-full brightness and setting up the dramatic Blood Moon eclipse early next week.
Main Part
Today’s moonrise at 6 34 p.m. EDT showcased the Moon at 95 percent illumination, with observers reporting crisp, clear views of its craters and maria through binoculars and telescopes.
This waxing gibbous phase occurs as the Moon moves toward its full phase, rising around sunset and dominating the late-evening sky.
On Sunday, September 7 at 2:09 p.m. EDT, the Moon will reach exact fullness, earning the Corn Moon moniker for its historical association with autumn crop harvesting.
Just hours later, Earth’s shadow will pass over the lunar surface, producing a total lunar eclipse-the year’s longest Blood Moon-visible across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia from late evening through early morning on September 7-8.
Skywatchers are advised to stake out viewing sites free of light pollution and to bring lunar filters or eclipse glasses to enhance color contrast as the Moon reddens during totality.
Following the eclipse, the Moon will continue to wane, entering last quarter on September 14 and New Moon on September 21, coinciding with a partial solar eclipse.
