Spike Lee Makes DC Movie Announcement, Discusses AI Impact on September 6

Acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee made a DC movie announcement today while his latest thriller “Highest 2 Lowest” continues generating critical acclaim on Apple TV+.
The 68-year-old director’s busy media day included appearances discussing his views on artificial intelligence and its impact on creativity, coinciding with renewed attention for his Denzel Washington collaboration that premiered on streaming platforms yesterday.
DC Project Details Remain Under Wraps
Social media posts confirmed Lee announced a DC Comics-related project today, though specific details about the superhero film remain undisclosed. In a recent interview, Lee had expressed openness to directing a Marvel or DC project, stating “It’d have to be the right film, the right superhero,” and suggesting interest in a Nick Fury movie given his history working with Samuel L. Jackson.
The announcement comes as Lee continues promoting “Highest 2 Lowest,” which marks his fifth collaboration with Denzel Washington and their first partnership since 2006’s “Inside Man.”
Strong Stance Against AI in Entertainment
Lee used his media appearances today to voice concerns about artificial intelligence’s impact on creativity and education. In connection with themes explored in “Highest 2 Lowest,” Lee criticized AI’s lack of authenticity, stating “AI has no music, no soul. It’s not human. No heartbeat”.
The director specifically addressed younger generations’ reliance on AI for academic work, warning: “How many young people are cheating themselves of knowledge and wisdom because their computer’s writing their papers? Somewhere down the line, you get bit in the butt because you cheated. You took a shortcut”.
Fresh Air Interview and Critical Reception
Lee appeared on NPR’s Fresh Air weekend program, discussing how “Highest 2 Lowest” puts “a hip-hop spin on Kurosawa’s 1963 classic”. The film centers on a music mogul facing a moral dilemma when kidnappers mistakenly hold his friend’s son for ransom instead of his own.
Critical reception for “Highest 2 Lowest” has been overwhelmingly positive, with the Indian Express publishing a review today praising Washington’s “dazzling” performance and calling the collaboration “worth the wait”. The film currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 175 critics’ reviews.
Upcoming Cultural Events
Lee is scheduled to participate in a Black Culture Movie Marathon at Milan’s Fondazione Prada on September 21, featuring a conversation with filmmaker Dee Rees, artist Theaster Gates, and curator Okwui Enwezor. The 21-hour marathon will showcase nine films portraying 90 years of Black social, cultural, and political visions in America.
The filmmaker continues his busy promotional schedule as “Highest 2 Lowest” streams exclusively on Apple TV+ following its theatrical release last month and Cannes Film Festival premiere.
