Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother” Claims Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival

Venice, Italy, September 7, 2025 - Jim Jarmusch’s anthology film Father Mother Sister Brother won the Golden Lion for best film at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, beating out several high-profile contenders.

The Italian festival’s jury awarded Jarmusch’s triptych of interlinked family stories the top prize, citing its “subtle yet profound exploration of generational bonds” and “restrained, evocative storytelling” as decisive factors. The film follows adult siblings and parents across New Jersey, Dublin and Paris, revealing fractured relationships and moments of tender reconciliation.

Festival organizers noted the timing of the award amid growing global tensions, praising Jarmusch for demonstrating how personal narratives can foster empathy. Actress Cate Blanchett, who stars in one segment alongside Vicky Krieps, said the film’s message “resonates with universal experiences of love, loss and the hope for understanding.”

In presenting the award, jury president Alexander Payne remarked that Father Mother Sister Brother “stands out for its clarity of vision and emotional depth,” calling it “an elegant tribute to the ties that bind-and sometimes fray-among fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers.”

Other notable winners included Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Voice of Hind Rajab, which received the Silver Lion and was lauded for its harrowing portrayal of a Palestinian family’s ordeal, and emerging director Luis Ramírez, who took home the Marcello Mastroianni Award for his performance in Sirât. The festival closes Monday with a special screening of Alfonso Cuarón’s restored classic Roma.
