Macau Issues No. 8 Typhoon Signal as Tapah Approaches

MAI TAI, MACAU - Macau Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau raised Typhoon Signal No. 8 this evening as Typhoon Tapah nears, accompanied by yellow and orange storm surge warnings to alert residents of heavy rain, strong winds and coastal flooding.
A rare escalation to Signal No. 8 underscores the storm’s rapid intensification and imminent threat to the peninsula, prompting authorities to urge businesses and schools to close and residents to secure property.
Macau’s tropical cyclone warning system now has Typhoon Signal No. 3 in effect, upgraded earlier today when Tapah strengthened, and will keep Signal No. 8 active from 20:00 until at least 23:00 if conditions worsen. Yellow storm surge warnings have been issued for all coastal areas, while the “orange” surge alert signals a growing risk of high tides overtopping breakwaters.
Authorities recommend the public to:
- Avoid seaside promenades and low-lying districts prone to flooding
- Secure loose outdoor items and reinforce windows
- Follow updates on transportation suspensions and school closures
The bureau forecasts Tapah will pass within 150 km southwest of Macau overnight, bringing gusts up to 160 km/h and rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some districts. Signals will be adjusted according to observed wind speeds and water levels through Monday morning.
