Olivia Cooke Highlights Fan Backlash and ‘The Girlfriend’ Premiere

Olivia Cooke condemned “f-ing horrible” online abuse from House of the Dragon fans and teased the September 10 launch of her new Prime Video thriller The Girlfriend tomorrow.
The British actress, best known for playing Alicent Hightower, spoke out about sustained hateful messages directed at her and co-stars, underscoring the darker side of fan culture and setting the stage for her next major role in a high-profile psychological thriller.
In a candid interview, Cooke described encounters where strangers photograph her and declare “We HATE your character,” sometimes with “real venom”. She blamed deep-rooted misogyny for much of the hostility and praised her fellow cast members for mutual support when online discourse turns toxic.
Meanwhile, Cooke shifts focus to The Girlfriend, a six-episode series co-starring Robin Wright, which “unravels” tomorrow on Prime Video in over 240 territories. Based on Michelle Frances’s novel, the drama follows Laura (Wright), whose perfect life begins to fracture when her son introduces Cherry (Cooke)-a newcomer whose secrets may prove deadly.
Cherry’s mysterious past and Laura’s growing paranoia spark a tense rivalry that escalates with each episode’s release. Cooke described teaming with Wright as “seamless,” noting the director-star’s presence on every scene and lauding her “raw emotion” and professionalism.
With House of the Dragon Season 3 in production and The Girlfriend debuting tomorrow, Cooke stands at the forefront of two major series, navigating both the exhilaration of high-stakes drama and the perils of modern fandom.
