Ford Recalls 1.9 Million Vehicles Over Faulty Backup Cameras

Lead Ford Motor Company has initiated a global recall of roughly 1.9 million vehicles after discovering that rear-view cameras may display inverted, distorted or blank images when drivers shift into reverse.

• Safety Hazard: A blank or distorted camera feed heightens the chance of back-over incidents and collisions when reversing.
• Incidents Reported: Ford noted 18 camera-related incidents worldwide but no injuries. Dealers have received 44,123 warranty claims linked to this defect.
• Remedy: Authorized dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the rear-view camera at no cost to owners.

Context and Enforcement

Ford’s latest recall follows prior actions this year over fuel pumps, instrument-panel failures and earlier camera glitches. In April, the company recalled 160,000 vehicles for similar rear-camera issues. In November 2024, Ford paid a $165 million civil penalty after an NHTSA probe found delays in addressing camera defects.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters by September 22 and can verify their status through the NHTSA recall database or by contacting Ford customer service.
