Spotify Rolls Out Lossless Streaming to Premium Users

Spotify has launched lossless audio streaming for Premium subscribers worldwide, delivering up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC at no extra cost starting September 10, 2025.

Nut Graf After eight years of anticipation, Spotify’s new “Lossless” tier brings CD-quality sound to over 50 markets. The feature arrives as part of existing Premium plans, undercutting expectations of a paid add-on, and leverages Spotify Connect to stream high-fidelity audio on compatible devices.

What’s New

  • Lossless streaming at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC for “nearly every track” in Spotify’s 100 million+ library.
  • Available immediately in initial markets including the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Japan and Sweden, with full rollout through October.
  • No new subscription tier or surcharge; all Premium users gain access automatically.

How It Works

Premium subscribers will receive an in-app notification when Lossless is available. To enable, navigate to:

  • Settings & Privacy → Media Quality → Lossless
  • Choose streaming preferences for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloads

An on-screen indicator appears in Now Playing and the Connect menu when streaming in Lossless mode.

Device Compatibility

Lossless streaming supports:

  • Mobile, desktop, and tablet Spotify apps
  • Third-party Spotify Connect devices from Denon, Bose, Marantz, Yamaha, Sennheiser, Samsung, Sony, and others
  • Sonos and Amazon speaker integration arriving next month

Why It Matters

By bundling Lossless at no extra cost, Spotify matches rivals Apple Music and Amazon Music HD while differentiating itself from subscription-based Hi-Res plans. The move may boost listener engagement and provide artists with higher-fidelity royalty streams.

What Comes Next

With Lossless live, Spotify may explore Hi-Res tiers above 24-bit/44.1 kHz and add advanced features for audiophiles. Meanwhile, the rollout’s success will hinge on user uptake, hardware performance, and potential impact on data usage and storage.
