NYC Prepares Twin Towers Tribute in Light for 24th Anniversary of 9/11

Lead: New York City will beam two columns of light symbolizing the original Twin Towers from dusk September 11 until dawn September 12, marking the 24th anniversary of the 2001 attacks and honoring the 2,977 victims.
Nut Graf: Dubbed Tribute in Light, the annual installation has become an emblem of remembrance and resilience, drawing visitors to the former World Trade Center plaza and visible up to 60 miles away. Presented by Con Edison and produced by Michael Ahern Production Services, it underscores the city’s ongoing commitment to never forget.
Tribute in Light Details
- Timing: Lights on from dusk September 11 to dawn September 12
- Design: 88 xenon bulbs (7,000 watts each) arranged in two 48-foot squares echoing Twin Towers footprints
- Location: Battery Parking Garage roof, with special public viewing on the 9/11 Memorial plaza
Ceremony and Viewing Experience
Visitors are invited to the Memorial plaza starting at 3 p.m. on September 11, immediately following the annual reading of victims’ names. The plaza will remain open until midnight, offering a solemn space for reflection.
Symbolism and Sponsorship
Beth Hillman, President & CEO of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, called the beams “a beacon of hope” that connects new generations to the events of 2001. Con Edison President Matthew Ketschke emphasized the company’s pride in sponsoring an installation that symbolizes both remembrance and the city’s strength.
Production Background
Initially conceived six months after the attacks amid cleanup efforts at Ground Zero, Tribute in Light emerged from a collaboration between the Municipal Art Society, Creative Time, and artists including John Bennett and Gustavo Boneverdi. The custom lights are fabricated by Space Cannon and skillfully assembled each year by a team of technicians.
