Manhunt Intensifies for Charlie Kirk’s Killer Near Utah Valley University

On Wednesday, conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an outdoor debate at Utah Valley University; a college-aged suspect remains at large as the FBI releases new images and footage and offers a $100,000 reward.

Authorities say the politically charged killing has underscored a surge in U.S. political violence and spurred urgent appeals for public assistance in the manhunt.

FBI Unveils Footage and Images

The FBI on Thursday published multiple surveillance clips showing the person of interest limping away from a campus rooftop moments after the shooting, clad in dark sunglasses, a baseball cap, jeans and sneakers. Sharper images released later depict the suspect carrying a black backpack and wearing a shirt bearing an American-flag motif.

Weapon Recovered in Nearby Woods

Investigators discovered the bolt-action hunting rifle believed to have been used in the attack-an older Mauser .30-06 wrapped in a towel-in a wooded area close to the crime scene. Forensics teams are examining palm prints, footprints and the rifle’s engraved ammunition for further evidence.

Reward and Death Penalty Appeal

The FBI has raised its reward to $100,000 for tips leading to the shooter’s arrest, receiving more than 7,000 leads to date, according to Utah Governor Spencer Cox. Cox reiterated that prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty once a suspect is in custody, vowing to hold “this evil human being” to the fullest extent of the law.

Political Fallout and Security Concerns

Kirk’s assassination has reignited partisan recriminations, with some Republicans blaming the left’s rhetoric and Democrats condemning the GOP’s resistance to gun-safety measures. Lawmakers on both sides have privately voiced heightened fears about personal security at public events and on Capitol Hill, intensifying calls for stronger protections.

Next Steps in the Investigation

FBI Director Kash Patel has traveled to Orem, Utah, to oversee the operation, and state and federal agents continue door-to-door inquiries in neighborhoods surrounding campus. Officials stress the importance of citizen cooperation to swiftly apprehend the suspect and prevent further political violence.
