Main Details
Polish Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk emphasized there was “no question of mistake,” insisting the incursion was a calculated escalation by Moscow. He urged the UN meeting to examine “deliberate aggression” by Russia.
Across the region, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced “Eastern Sentry,” a rapid deployment plan for enhanced air patrols, ground-based interceptors and sensor networks along the alliance’s eastern border. He warned that hostile drone activity has increased not only over Poland but also Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania.
Russia’s Defence Ministry maintained that its drones targeted only Ukrainian infrastructure and blamed navigational errors due to electronic warfare. Belarusian officials similarly denied intent, claiming training exercises impacted drone trajectories.
President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko have launched joint “Zapad-2025” drills along Poland’s frontier, simulating defensive and offensive scenarios. Warsaw closed its last border crossings with Belarus and deployed an additional 40,000 troops to reinforce the Suwałki corridor, a critical NATO land bridge to the Baltics.
Poland invoked Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty, calling for allied consultations on collective security measures. European capitals are preparing further sanctions and force deployments in response to what they view as a direct challenge to NATO’s eastern members.
