San Gennaro Fest Kicks Into High Gear with Blessing of the Stands and Food Contests

Lead Thousands flocked to Little Italy’s Mulberry Street today as the 99th Feast of San Gennaro marked its second day with the traditional Blessing of the Stands and competitive eating events.

Nut Graf Organizers said today’s ceremonies and contests underscore the festival’s blend of faith, food and community, drawing both longtime residents and visitors keen to savor Italian-American heritage.

Blessing of the Stands · At 6 p.m., clergy from the Shrine Church of the Most Precious Blood solemnly blessed more than 100 vendor booths, invoking prosperity and safety for the 11-day celebration. · Merchants and restaurateurs lined up for the ritual before opening their stalls serving sausage and peppers, zeppoles and cannoli.

Culinary Contests · Early-arriving foodies cheered on competitors as they devoured plates of pizza, meatballs and powdered zeppole in timed eating challenges. · Organizers reported robust participation in the pizza-slice and cannoli contests, with spectators urging contestants on.

Street Party Atmosphere · Mulberry Street between Canal and Houston closed to traffic, transforming into a pedestrian-only stretch alive with red-white-green bunting, live music and carnival games. · Local bands alternated with Italian-American performers, while families tested their luck at toss-the-ring and balloon-dart booths.
