Thousands Gather in Waikīkī for “A Hui Hou” Fiji Tribute Concert

Over 30,000 fans descended on Waikīkī Shell and Kapiʻolani Regional Park in Honolulu on Saturday evening for the “A Hui Hou” Fiji Tribute Concert honoring late reggae icon George “Fiji” Veikoso. The all-star lineup delivered heartfelt renditions of his greatest hits, transforming the seaside venue into a vibrant celebration of his enduring legacy.
The tribute concert underscored Fiji’s profound impact on Pacific reggae and Hawaiian music, bringing together generations of fans to commemorate his life and artistry. Organized by the Kina‘ole Foundation with support from the City and County of Honolulu, the event reflected the island spirit of aloha and unity that Fiji championed.
Star-Studded Lineup and Electric Atmosphere
- Performances by J Boog, Common Kings, Maoli, The Green, Sammy Johnson, Kapena, Ekolu and more energized the crowd.
- Fans arrived as early as dawn, sharing food and stories while awaiting doors opening at noon in the park and 4 p.m. at the Shell.
- Thousands sang along to classics like “One Love” and “Island Girl,” creating a communal sing-along under the Hawaiian sky.
Seamless Crowd Management
Honolulu Police and Emergency Management teams deployed hundreds of officers and volunteers to oversee traffic and safety, while shuttle services from the Neal Blaisdell Center eased congestion around the venue. Despite the scale, organizers reported no major incidents and praised the respectful cooperation of attendees.
Live Stream Extends Tribute Worldwide
For those unable to attend in person, the concert was live-streamed on YouTube via the official @FijiTheArtist channel, reaching global audiences and allowing fans across the Pacific to join the farewell celebration.
A Legacy Remembered
As the final chords faded beneath the Waikīkī moonlit sky, attendees reflected on Fiji’s transformative influence. “He brought our islands together through music,” said longtime fan Desiree Rilveria, her voice mingling with the applause. The night affirmed that, although Fiji is gone, his melody will resonate in hearts across oceans-until we meet again.
