Ghana Takes Global Lead and Advances Domestic Initiatives

Ghana assumed the chairmanship of the Global Action Against Mass Atrocity Crimes (GAAMAC) and unveiled a GH¢13.9 billion “Big Push” infrastructure plan today, while deploying additional police to Sampa and launching the Afro-Brazil Ghana Festival to boost cultural ties.

Ghana Assumes GAAMAC Chairmanship
Ghana officially took over as Chair and Secretariat of GAAMAC in Accra on September 14, leading efforts to prevent genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity worldwide. The Presidency highlighted Ghana’s commitment to coordinating political, legal and civil-society stakeholders to strengthen atrocity-prevention mechanisms across Africa and beyond.
GH¢13.9 Billion “Big Push” Infrastructure Drive
Under the new “Big Push” programme, the government will invest GH¢13.9 billion in road rehabilitation, port modernization and rural electrification. Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson stated the initiative aims to spur private investment, create jobs and reduce logistical costs in underserved regions.
Enhanced Security in Sampa District
In response to rising cross-border crime, the Ghana Police Service deployed additional officers to the Sampa District in the Upper West Region. Regional commissioner Samuel Abankwah explained the reinforcement will patrol major transit routes, conduct community outreach and collaborate with neighbouring Burkina Faso counterparts to curb illicit activity.
Afro-Brazil Ghana Festival Launch
The Ministry of Tourism inaugurated the first Afro-Brazil Ghana Festival in Accra, celebrating centuries-old cultural links through music, dance and culinary exhibitions. The week-long event will feature Brazilian capoeira demonstrations, Ghanaian-Brazilian art collaborations and forums on diaspora engagement to deepen bilateral exchanges.
