Unconventional Sound Alchemist
- Self-taught on over a dozen instruments, from accordion to saxophone, he incorporated teapots, water-filled bottles and even piglet squeals into performances.
- Released seminal albums including Slaves Mass (1976), featuring three compositions later covered by Miles Davis.
Collaborations with Jazz Greats

Early Life and Lasting Legacy
Born June 22, 1936, in rural Alagoas, he overcame childhood hardship and albinism to master his father’s accordion by age seven. His refusal to be confined by genre helped shape modern jazz and Brazilian music alike. Even into his 80s, he continued composing daily and leading ensembles, leaving behind over 2,000 instrumental works that challenge categorization and celebrate creative freedom.
