Elon University Announces Merger with Queens University of Charlotte

ELON, N.C., Sept. 16, 2025 - Elon University President Connie Book announced today at College Coffee a planned merger with Queens University of Charlotte to combine resources and expand academic offerings by summer 2026.

The partnership will unite two historic institutions under Elon’s operational leadership, aiming to broaden access, enhance graduate programs and strengthen Charlotte’s educational landscape.

Elon will assume operational oversight of Queens, maintaining Queens’ campus experience while integrating Elon’s programs and alumni network. The boards of both universities approved the merger plan on Sept. 15, with final structure to be finalized this November and implementation slated for summer 2026.

President Book, speaking remotely from Charlotte, said the merger “unites two institutions deeply committed to student success,” and will create “new pathways for experiential learning, professional training and workforce-ready graduates” in the rapidly growing Charlotte metro area.

Student and Faculty Engagement

• Town Hall for Faculty and Staff Scheduled for Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. in Alumni Gym to address questions and outline governance structure.
• Student Government Association Q&A President Book will join SGA on Sept. 18 at 8:30 p.m. in Moseley Student Center, Room 215.

Campus Activities Today

• Business Job & Internship Fair (2:30-5 p.m., Alumni Gym) offered students on‐site interviews and networking with regional employers.
• Bold Expressions Workshop (2-3 p.m., virtual) by LGBTQIA Alumni Network on navigating cis-hetero-centered workplaces.

Looking Ahead

Both universities will release detailed plans this fall on leadership roles, academic integration and community partnerships. As Charlotte’s population is projected to grow 21 percent by 2034, the merger positions Elon and Queens to meet evolving regional demands and reinforce their civic mission.
