Officer-Involved Shooting Triggers Lockdowns in York County

York County, PA (September 17, 2025) - An officer-involved shooting in North Codorus Township Thursday afternoon prompted lockdowns at Spring Grove School District and WellSpan York Hospital and drew Gov. Josh Shapiro to the scene within hours.

The spring grove schools and nearby hospital were placed under shelter-in-place orders after a reported shooting around 2:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Haar Road in North Codorus Township. The swift response underscores ongoing concerns about public safety in suburban communities.

Spring Grove schools from kindergarten through grade 12 were instructed to shelter in place “due to an officer-involved incident” unrelated to students or staff, according to the district’s alert to families. WellSpan York Hospital implemented a full lockdown as medical staff secured patients and redirected non-emergent traffic. Pennsylvania State Police and local law enforcement sealed off roadways, deploying a helicopter and fire police to secure the perimeter.

Governor Shapiro, briefed on the situation, announced he was en route to York County to assess the response and offer state support. “We ask those in the area to please follow the directions of local law enforcement and PA State Police,” Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis posted on social media, urging residents to steer clear of the affected zone as details continued to emerge.

Witnesses reported at least one officer sustained injuries and was airlifted from the scene, highlighting the dangers faced by first responders during high-risk calls. Ted Czech, York County’s public information officer, confirmed emergency dispatches began at 2:10 p.m. and emphasized the community’s cooperation as law enforcement worked to restore normalcy.

Authorities have not released further details on the suspect or motive; the investigation remains active. Residents are advised to monitor official county and school district channels for updates and to avoid travel near Haar Road until further notice.
