Netflix Greenlights World War II Series from “American Primeval” Director

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18, 2025 - Netflix has ordered a new limited series set during World War II, enlisting Peter Berg-the creative force behind the streaming hit American Primeval-to direct and executive produce the project under a multi-picture deal with the streamer.

The announcement builds on the success of American Primeval, which debuted in January 2025 and quickly rose to the top of Netflix’s global Top 10. The WWII drama will reunite Berg with several collaborators from his previous Western epic and aims to explore untold stories of heroism and sacrifice in the European theater.

Production is slated to begin in early 2026, with filming locations announced later this fall. The series is expected to consist of six hour-long episodes, mirroring the format that resonated with audiences for American Primeval. Berg reportedly tapped screenwriter Mark L. Smith-who penned both The Revenant and American Primeval-to co-write the WWII series, ensuring a continuity of the visceral storytelling that defined his prior work.

Key cast and behind-the-scenes talent will be revealed in the coming weeks. Netflix executives cited Berg’s “distinctive, immersive vision” and the global appeal of American Primeval as driving factors behind greenlighting this new high-stakes war drama. The series is expected to debut on Netflix in late 2026.
