Olivia Nuzzi Joins Vanity Fair as West Coast Editor

Olivia Nuzzi has been named West Coast editor at Vanity Fair, ending an 11-month hiatus from journalism after her departure from New York magazine in September 2024 over a conflict-of-interest review.

The former New York Magazine Washington correspondent will oversee content across platforms for the Pacific region and contribute feature stories to the flagship title, reinforcing Vanity Fair’s push to expand its West Coast presence.

Vanity Fair global editorial director Mark Guiducci praised Nuzzi’s “talent and expertise,” noting her deep understanding of political and cultural beats. Nuzzi’s appointment follows an external investigation that found no inaccuracies in her reporting, despite the magazine’s decision that her personal relationship with a former subject violated ethics standards.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Editing multimedia stories and special projects focused on West Coast industries and culture
  • Writing investigative and long-form pieces for both print and online editions
  • Collaborating with digital and social teams to grow Vanity Fair’s audience in the Pacific region

Nuzzi’s hiring was announced alongside a dozen other new staffers, signaling a strategic talent infusion under Guiducci’s leadership. On social media, industry colleagues welcomed her return, with veteran writer Alicia Smith tweeting, “One of the strongest longform writers out there - thrilled to see Olivia back in the game”.

Since her exit from New York magazine, Nuzzi has engaged in conversations with several outlets, ultimately choosing Vanity Fair for its editorial reach and culture. She steps into her new role immediately, reporting to Guiducci in New York while splitting time between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
