UNCW Campus Threat Cleared as ‘Spirit Rock’ Political Tensions Escalate

UNCW police declared an all-clear after investigating a campus threat early Sept. 18, while separate protests over a Charlie Kirk memorial on the “Spirit Rock” have sparked online threats and heightened security at the heart of campus activism.

The university confirmed the threat investigation concluded without incident and that evacuated dorms have reopened, underscoring campus safety as UNCW navigates a week marked by politically charged demonstrations around the Spirit Rock memorializing conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Threat Investigation Concludes

UNCW University Police, working with New Hanover County and state partners, began probing a threat received at 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 18. Randall and Discovery Halls were temporarily evacuated as a precaution, but the investigation wrapped up by midday with no further action required, and campus operations resumed normally.

‘Spirit Rock’ Becomes Protest Flashpoint

A vigil held Sept. 15 by Turning Point USA to honor the late Charlie Kirk drew over 1,500 attendees and featured a painted tribute on the Spirit Rock. Opposing students repainted the rock in Transgender Pride colors, igniting tense exchanges, minor scuffles and circulating videos that prompted threats against participants on social media.

Campus police remain on high alert following posts threatening “militia” action against students, professors and administrators. UNCW has condemned the threats and is coordinating with local law enforcement to protect all members of the Seahawk community.

Chancellor’s Call for Civil Discourse

Chancellor Aswani K. Volety released a statement decrying the violence and urging intellectual engagement over confrontation. He emphasized the university’s commitment to safety and free expression, warning that any policy or legal violations will be addressed swiftly and urging the campus to rise above division.
